Introduction
Over the past four years several partners in water management have implemented a programme on Water for Food and Ecosystems, comprising 22 projects in Asia, Latin America, Africa and Europe. These have provided a number of ‘lessons learned’ that have helped to challenge and shape views on ways of tackling the looming water crisis. This includes questioning some of the traditions or assumptions that are currently commonplace in the international dialogue on Water for Food and Ecosystems. We would like to share our views and ‘lessons learned’ on this website, as we believe they can usefully add to the international debates and dialogues on water management, while at the same time we stress the need for concrete action. Please, have a look at the different actions within the Water for Food and Water and Ecosystems programme, which merged into the Water for Food and Ecosystems Programme. Lessons learned have also been gathered in a booklet which you are able to download by clicking the image on the right. | ![]() |

Partners for Water Programme
In March 2000, during the 2nd World Water Forum and the parallel Ministerial Conference at The Hague, the Government of the Netherlands made a pledge to protect the security of the world's water supply in the twenty-first century. The initiatives on Water for Food and Water and Ecosystems were launched as a result of this pledge. Both aim at enhancing the exchange of knowledge and experience on their respective topics to the spirit and recommendation of the Forum and Ministerial Conference.
Projects of the Water for Food and Ecosystems Programme have been made possible with financial support from the 'Partners for Water Programme', which combines the effort of the Netherlands Government and the private sector, towards worldwide, sustainable, integrated water resources management. Partners for Water has a EUR 30 million budget for the 2000-2004 timeframe. A prolongation of the programme is under consideration.
